Jonathan Gregory


Jonathan Gregory studies music at the Royal Academy of Music, London and at Clare College Cambridge, where he was an Organ Scholar. He was appointed as the Master of Music at Leicester Cathedral in 1994 having previously been Organist and Director of Music at Belfast Cathedral, St.George’s Church Belfast, Great St.Mary’s, the University Church Cambridge.

Jonathan has given many performances in the UK of oratorios, orchestral music, including Bach’s St Matthew Passion, St John Passion, Mass in B Minor, Christmas Oratorio, Elgar’s Apostles, Handel’s Messiah and Britain’s War Requiem. He has made recordings and broadcasts for the BBC and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, and Examiner for the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.

He took the Leicester Cathedral Choir to Japan in October 2005 as part of 2005 EU-Japan Year of People to People Exchanges, visited Toyama, Kyoto, Nara, Yokohama and Tokyo. The visit, Friendship Music Visit to Japan, strengthened links with Japanese Anglican churches, Rikkyo schools & university greatly, and introduced English Cathedral and church music in Japan. He has given many recitals, workshops and master classes in Japan, and is well established in the church & cathedral music scene.

In 1992 Jonathan founded the UK-Japan Music Society and UK-Japan Choir. Their performances of western and Japanese choral music have attracted popular interest in London, Cambridge and Leicester. He conducted Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat and other works at St John’s Smith Square, Moteverdi’s Vespers at Leicester Cathedral. Since 2003 he directs Christmas Concert at St John’s Wood Church in London.

As an organist and harpsichordist, Jonathan has given recitals in the British Isles, Europe and Japan, and at St John’s College, Cambridge, Christ Church Nara and the Embassy of Japan in London. He has recently played with the London Mozart Players and Philharmonia Orchestra at De Montfort Hall in Leicester.
